Ductless works best where ductwork would be hard to add, or where one space needs its own temperature:
Additions, sunrooms and finished attics
Bedrooms that run hotter or colder than the rest of the house
Older homes heated by a boiler and radiators
In-law suites and finished basements
Garages and workshops
Offices, server rooms and medical offices
The ICS projects further down this page show three of these cases.
Bryant and Mitsubishi ductless systems
ICS installs Bryant ductless systems as a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer and also installs Mitsubishi Electric ductless systems.
Bryant's ductless line reaches up to 35.1 SEER2 for cooling and 15.6 HSPF2 for heating. Inverter compressors speed up and slow down to hold the temperature you set, which keeps the systems quiet and efficient.
Bryant ductless systems carry a 10-year parts limited warranty when registered with Bryant within 90 days of installation.

Two ductless zones for a medical office
A family practice shared one heating and cooling system with the rest of its building, so the doctors couldn't set the temperature in their own exam rooms.
We installed a Bryant ductless heat pump with two wall-mounted indoor units, each with its own remote. The outdoor unit hangs on the wall outside the two offices, which kept the refrigerant lines short.

A comfortable primary bedroom in a newer colonial
The primary bedroom sat at the far end of the duct system and never got as much heating or cooling as the rest of the house. Turning the thermostat down to cool it made the other rooms too cold.
A single-zone Bryant ductless heat pump gave the bedroom its own heating and cooling, set separately from the main system.

Separate heating and cooling for an in-law suite
A family added an in-law suite and needed it heated and cooled to the grandparents' liking without changing the temperature in the rest of the house.
We installed a Bryant ductless heat pump with two indoor units, a high-wall unit and a floor console, so the suite's bedroom and living room each have their own controls.
“They sent a couple techs out this morning. They identified and fixed the problem and saved us from a sweltering day and gave us relief from the terrible heat!”
“Instead of upselling me on a brand new air conditioner like the other heating and cooling companies tried to do, he performed an honest capacitor replacement and had my AC running like new within an hour of diagnosis.”

“The entire team was knowledgeable, thorough in their explanations, and maintained a clean workspace throughout the project. They also removed the oil tank efficiently and without any odor.”
“They provided excellent service from start to finish: sales, installation, training us on the new smart thermostat and the office support staff. They even completed the rebate forms for me.”

Frequently asked questions
How does a ductless mini-split work?
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that needs no ductwork. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units through a line set: refrigerant lines, a drain line and a power cable that pass through a small hole in the wall. Each indoor unit has its own remote or thermostat, so every room or zone is set on its own. Indoor units come as high-wall units, floor consoles, ceiling cassettes, or concealed ducted units that hide in a ceiling or closet and feed a few short ducts.
Do ductless mini-splits heat in winter?
Yes. They're heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. Many homes use ductless to heat an addition or a cold room and keep the main system for the rest of the house.
How many zones do I need?
Usually one indoor unit for each room or open area you want to control. A single room needs one. We recommend a layout after we see the space.
How do I take care of a ductless system?
Rinse the indoor units' washable filters every month or two when the system runs hard, and keep snow and leaves clear of the outdoor unit. A yearly service visit cleans the coils and drains and checks the refrigerant.
How much does a ductless mini-split cost?
Ductless prices vary more than central air prices, because every system is built for the space. The number of zones matters most: each room or area with its own indoor unit is a zone, and a single-zone system costs far less than a whole-home system. High-wall indoor units cost the least, while floor consoles, ceiling cassettes and concealed ducted units cost more. Longer or harder line set runs add labor, the outdoor unit needs its own 240-volt circuit, and a wired or Wi-Fi thermostat costs extra. You get a written quote after we see the space.
Can ductless cool a home with radiators?
Yes. Ductless is one of the simplest ways to add air conditioning to a home heated by a boiler and radiators, because it needs no ductwork.
Do you install ductless in offices?
Yes. In 2017 we added two ductless zones to a medical office in South Whitehall Township so the practice could set its own temperature. See commercial HVAC.
